Dear friends,

No one, on their death bed, will wish they had watched more Netflix or sports. Many of us will wish we had been more prayerful – so please join me in saying to the Lord, “Lord, please make me more prayerful.” At Messiah, we are asking you to consider one or more of three means to be more prayerful. They are: 10:2 prayer, 12:12 prayer and daily prayer.

In an earlier blog I talked about 10:2 prayer. It is based on Luke 10:2 where Jesus says, ““The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” (ESV) So, my invitation is to set your alarm for 10:02 am six days a week and when the alarm, goes off – pray the verse. Pray that you will live life as the Lord’s labourer, working in His field, bringing in His harvest to His glory. Pray for more labourers within and without Messiah. Pray that the Lord will guide and provide as we discern His will about raising up new congregations.

The second means, 12:12 prayer, is similar to 10:2 prayer but it is based on a different Bible verse and connects to different concerns. Romans 12:12 says, “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” (ESV) Our focus is on the last phrase – be constant in prayer. This Sunday you will receive your first quarterly prayer card/ bookmark. We are asking you to commit to carrying this card with you and set your alarm to 12:12pm. When the alarm goes off, pray the three or four prayer requests written on the card. We will issue a new card for July – September. Please set your alarms and take a minute or so (or longer if you are able) and pray. For this quarter we have four requests of the Lord. First, that Messiah will be a more prayerful people. Second, that relationships and community will grow in Messiah. Third, that the Lord will use us more and more in evangelism. Fourth, that the Lord will guide and provide as we consider planting two new congregations.

Our third means is a beautiful small book, called The Daily Offices, which can help you read the Bible and pray every morning and evening. This small book was developed by one of sister churches, St Peter’s Fireside, in Vancouver. We know we are starting this late, but we thought it was better to start late than not at all. It is designed to go from January 1 to December 31.

The book gives you a Scripture reading for each morning and evening and a different prayer / devotional focus for each day of the week and time of the day. The prayer foci have been re-written to reflect the ministries that we at Messiah are involved in and connected to. We are hoping that people will find the book helpful and then have a new book available in time for January 1, 2019. The books have a small printing cost (under $5). People can take the book for free; those who would like to donate a loonie or a $20 to defray costs are welcome to do so. However, mainly, we want to just encourage and exhort you to pray! Please pray for me, that I will be more prayerful.
