Dear friends,

Every day, from Monday to Saturday, the alarm on my phone goes off at 10:02am. On Sunday my phone alarm goes off at 9:37am. For the record, it is not to wake me up! I set the alarm as a reminder to take a minute and pray in light of Luke 10:2 (or Matthew 9:37 (to 38) as a parallel text).

Luke 10:2 records Jesus as saying, “And Jesus said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.  Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

There are several things of great interest in this passage. First of all, He issues this command to pray earnestly to the “seventy-two” whom Jesus called and sent ahead of Him to prepare His way. Second, and most important, this text, and the similar text in Matthew 9, is the only time Jesus told us to pray earnestly. He talks of prayer many times, but this is the one thing he has commanded us to pray earnestly for. So, maybe this should become a part of our prayer life, in fact, an important part of our prayer life.

I have to confess that I wax and wane, go up and down, on this prayer command. Please pray for me! I have returned to this command again in light of Messiah Council’s decision to discern whether the Lord is calling us to multiply Messiah. In other words, is the Lord calling us to work with Daniel and Jonathan to form two or more congregations – making Messiah one church with three congregations? Is the Lord calling us to multiply in the Kanata/Stittsville area and in urban Ottawa, but as a Sunday evening congregation?

So, I urge you. Set your phone alarms and join me and join me in Luke 10:2 prayer. First, memorize the passage. Then, pray in light of the passage. Finally, as part of praying Luke 10:2, ask the Lord to lead, guide and provide as we
consider multiplying in Kanata and by forming a Sunday evening congregation.

After you have memorized the passage, think about the Bible text and pray honestly. Some of what I have been praying lately follows.

“Lord, I believe; help my unbelief! It is easy to see greater Ottawa as a place with no harvest; to see Christianity in decline. Help me to believe Your word that You have a ripe harvest in Ottawa.”

“Lord, make me a labourer in Your harvest. Make Messiah a congregation of labourers in Your harvest. Raise up more and more labourers to go into Your field, for Your harvest, for Your glory.”

“Lord, help me to pray earnestly for You to send labourers into Your harvest.”

“Lord, use us to plant ANiC churches in Orleans, Riverside South, Leitrim, Barrhaven, Cornwall, Kemptville, Carleton Place and Arnprior as well!

All to Your glory and praise!”
