Dear friends,

I know that, “just because the Bible says it is God’s word written does not make it God’s word written”. I know that some arguments for the authority of the Bible are circular – and therefore not a valid argument. Over this and the next few blogs I am going to talk about these questions. But before we do, it is good to see what the Bible says about itself. If the Bible did not claim to be God’s word written, it would be weird if Christians claimed it was.

So, what does the Bible say about itself? For now we will just look at Galatians 3: 1-25; the part of the Bible I preached on last week and this week.

First, in Galatians 3:6, Paul quotes from Genesis 15:6. He quotes it in such a way that shows he believes it is a real summary/account of God speaking and acting. So, when we read Galatians 3:6 and Genesis 15:6 we are hearing God explain how He will make Abraham right with Himself.

Second, listen to how Paul describes the Bible and its “power”. In Galatians 3:8 Paul will quote Genesis 12: 38 and 18:18. Paul says, And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” So, here we see that the Bible can foresee. But only God can foresee. So the Bible is so closely related to God that God foreseeing and speaking is the Bible foreseeing and speaking. Notice, as well, that when we read the Bible we hear God preaching.

Third, notice in Galatians 3: 10-14, Paul makes four explanatory points and he grounds each point in a quote from the Bible. He is demonstrating the authoritative, “final-word-nature” of the Bible. But the Bible can only have this if it is from God.

Fourth, note in Galatians 3: 15-18 how Paul treats even minor grammatical points in Genesis 3, 12, 15 and 18 as being very significant and authoritative. Again, this shows the “God-originated’ nature of the Bible.

Fifth, note how, in Galatians 3:22 the Bible is spoken of as “imprisoning everything”. But, only God can do this, no other person or thing! So, the Bible “stands in” for God. The Bible speaking is really God speaking.

This is why orthodox Anglicans, like orthodox Christians everywhere, affirm and believe that “the Bible is God’s word written.” To hear the Bible is to hear God speak. The Bible is authoritative and powerful and properly understood, without error. I will write more on this in weeks to come.
