Dear Friends,

I know it can sound presumptuous, but our prayer at Messiah should be that God will form and mold and shape us. In fact, this is not necessarily presumptuous. God wants us to want Him to form and reform His church. If He desires this, it is humble to listen and presumptuous to insist on going our own way.

Listen to what the Bible, God’s Word written, says, I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12: 1-2 (ESV) JB Phillips famously translated part of this passage as “don’t let the world squeeze you into its mold.”

One key aspect of Gospel transformation is the humble hearing and thinking on God’s Word in light of the Gospel – the Good News that Jesus Christ crucified is the power of God for salvation to all who receive Him. Once again, seeing all of the Bible centred and based on this Good News (that Jesus Messiah crucified and risen is the power of God for salvation to all who believe) is not just one way or our way to read the Bible. To see this is to humbly listen and obey what Jesus says. These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled. Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations…” Luke 24: 44-47

One way we try to live this in our common life is to preach through books of the Bible. We have resumed preaching through 2 Corinthians after a break for the Christmas series, Rarely Told Origin Stories of Jesus.

I am seeking God’s direction for the next book of the Bible I will preach through once we have finished 2 Corinthians. Please pray that I will clearly hear His leading.

Please pray that God will continually reform Messiah by His Word written. Please pray for Holy Spirit revival and renewal as well!
